Falwell's Ministry of Hate
NEVER SPEAK ill of the dead, goes the old saying. But in the case of conservative evangelical Rev. Jerry Falwell--who died last week at the age of 73--his lengthy record of bigotry and intolerance speaks for itself.Even the mainstream media coverage of Falwell's death couldn't avoid sounding like a "worst of" list of his narrow-minded prejudice--from his proud embrace of anti-gay, anti-feminist and anti-choice bigotry, to his avowed hatred of public education, the ACLU and, of course, a certain purple Teletubbie.Falwell came to prominence with the rise of right-wing Christian evangelicals during the 1980s.Earlier on in his career, Falwell was an ardent segregationist, preaching against what he called the "civil wrongs movement." Calling segregation the "Lord's will," he said of the 1954 Brown v.
More cases of encroachments by Church come to light
Chief Minister asks special task force to probe dealsClose on the heels of a media revelation about land grabbing by a powerful church congregation in Munnar several other instances of land grabbing involving the Church are coming to light and the Government has directed the police and the State Vigilance Department to probe into the antecedents of these land grabbers. It is learnt that the Chief Minister's office has given a directive to the special task force head Suresh Kumar to conduct a thorough investigation into the details of land grabbed by these Churches and to produce a list of the offenders who are involved. The intelligence wing of the State police is also keenly probing the matter and there are reports that a Christian priest who was associated with the grabbing of huge tracts of land in Munnar is already on the run with the police and the Vigilance breathing down his neck.It may be recalled that The Pioneer had carried a story on the number of churches which had grabbed Government land and with the disclosure by the police intelligence about the king pin of this whole move the issue is getting hotter .There are serious efforts on the part of the clergy to come clear on the issue and to prevent the Government from taking further action.

Woman hopes Supreme Court allows her to sue Catholic Church
BY DAN HORNA Cincinnati woman will ask the Ohio Supreme Court today for the right to sue the Catholic Church, which she claims pressured her to put her baby up for adoption to protect the priest who got her pregnant. The woman, who has not been identified, accuses the Archdiocese of Cincinnati of fraud and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She says the priest, Norman Heil, had sex with her several times in 1965 when she was a 16-year-old student at Regina High School in Norwood.Church officials say the lawsuit should be dismissed because the statute of limitations, the deadline for filing lawsuits, passed decades ago.But the woman's lawyer said the case should proceed because church officials broke the law 42 years ago when they coerced her into giving up the child and any potential claims against the church."She figuratively had a gun up to her head," said her lawyer, Marc Mezibov.
